Care & Longevity
Pieces made to last. Cared for to last longer.
A few simple habits will keep your Amaraeth pieces looking exactly as they did on day one. Here is everything you need to know.
The essentials
A few habits that protect every piece you own.
A couple of these are for our silver and stones only — our stainless steel Keep It On pieces are built for water and daily wear. Each rule says who it is for.
Take silver and gemstone pieces off before showering or swimming. Chlorinated and salt water accelerate tarnish and can loosen settings. (Our stainless steel Keep It On pieces are the exception — they are waterproof.)
Put jewellery on after perfume, moisturiser and hairspray. Chemicals in these products dull plating and can damage stones.
Sweat is mildly acidic and accelerates tarnish. Remove silver and gemstone pieces before sport, gym or any physical activity.
Bleach, cleaning products and chlorine are damaging. Remove jewellery before cleaning, swimming in pools or using hand sanitiser excessively.
Sleeping in delicate pieces bends settings, pulls chains and puts unnecessary stress on clasps and joins.
A soft cloth after each wear removes skin oils and surface residue. This single habit extends the life of every finish significantly.
Keep It On · Stainless Steel
Built to be lived in. Almost nothing to remember.
Our Keep It On line is stainless steel, so it asks far less of you than precious metals. It does not tarnish, it does not need polishing, and it is made for water. Shower, swim, sweat and sleep in it. The notes beside this are the only care it needs.
Shower, swim, sweat and sleep in it. Stainless steel is waterproof and will not tarnish, so there is nothing to take off.
Steel holds its colour on its own. A wipe with a soft cloth to remove skin oils and everyday residue is all it ever asks for.
Salt and chlorine are harmless to steel, but a quick rinse with fresh water and a dry with a soft cloth keeps it bright.
Waterproof does not mean indestructible. Avoid dropping pieces on hard surfaces, and store them so they do not knock against each other.
The Fine Line · 925 Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is built to age beautifully with a little help.
Our Fine Line pieces are made with 925 sterling silver - 92.5% pure silver, the highest grade used in jewellery - many finished in 18k gold vermeil. Silver naturally oxidises over time, but tarnish is surface-level and always reversible. These habits will slow it down significantly.
Silver benefits from regular wear. The natural oils in your skin help maintain its shine, pieces worn daily tarnish more slowly than those left unworn.
Use a lint-free silver polishing cloth. Rub in straight lines rather than circles. This removes light tarnish without scratching the surface.
For heavier tarnish, use a drop of mild dish soap in warm water. Gently clean with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before storing.
Always dry completely after cleaning or contact with water. Moisture left in crevices accelerates tarnish, especially around stone settings.
Natural Gemstones
Each stone has its own character and its own needs.
Wipe with a damp soft cloth. Amethyst can fade with extended UV exposure, store away from direct sunlight when not wearing.
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Garnet is durable but sensitive to sudden temperature changes, avoid steam cleaning.
Moonstone is softer than most gems and can scratch. Clean gently with a damp cloth only. Avoid mechanical cleaning methods entirely.
Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Labradorite's characteristic play of colour (labradorescence) is internal, gentle surface cleaning is all it needs.
Clean with warm water and mild soap. Iolite shows different colours from different angles, this is natural and called pleochroism, not a defect.
Never use bleach, ammonia or alcohol on any natural stone. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless specifically noted as safe. When in doubt, a damp soft cloth is always the right answer.
Storage
How you store your pieces matters as much as how you wear them.
Every Amaraeth order includes an anti-tarnish pouch. Use it. Keeping pieces separate prevents scratching, and the anti-tarnish lining slows oxidation significantly.
Store your pieces in the protective pouch when not wearing them.
Store each piece individually to prevent scratching. Harder stones will scratch softer metals and other stones if left together.
Do not store silver in bathrooms. Humidity accelerates tarnish. A cool, dry drawer or jewellery box is ideal.
Store necklaces hanging rather than coiled to prevent kinking and tangling. If you must store flat, lay them straight.
