Care & Longevity

Pieces made to last. Cared for to last longer.

A few simple habits will keep your Amaraeth pieces looking exactly as they did on day one. Here is everything you need to know.

The essentials

Six things that will protect every piece you own.

These rules apply to every piece regardless of stone or metal. Follow them and your jewellery will outlast trends, seasons, and years.

💧
Remove before water

Shower, swim, wash up. Water, especially chlorinated or salt water accelerates tarnish and weakens settings over time.

🌸
Last on, first off

Put jewellery on after perfume, moisturiser and hairspray. Chemicals in these products dull plating and can damage stones.

🏋️
Remove during exercise

Sweat is mildly acidic and accelerates tarnish. Remove pieces before sport, gym or any physical activity.

🧴
Avoid harsh chemicals

Bleach, cleaning products and chlorine are damaging. Remove jewellery before cleaning, swimming in pools or using hand sanitiser excessively.

😴
Do not sleep in jewellery

Sleeping in pieces bends delicate settings, pulls chains and puts unnecessary stress on clasps and joins.

Clean regularly

A soft cloth after each wear removes skin oils and surface residue. This single habit extends the life of plating significantly.

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is built to age beautifully with a little help.

All Amaraeth pieces are made with 925 sterling silver - 92.5% pure silver, the highest grade used in jewellery. Silver naturally oxidises over time, but tarnish is surface-level and always reversible. These habits will slow it down significantly.

7
Wear it often

Silver benefits from regular wear. The natural oils in your skin help maintain its shine, pieces worn daily tarnish more slowly than those left unworn.

8
Polish with a soft cloth

Use a lint-free silver polishing cloth. Rub in straight lines rather than circles. This removes light tarnish without scratching the surface.

9
Clean with mild soap

For heavier tarnish, use a drop of mild dish soap in warm water. Gently clean with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before storing.

10
Dry thoroughly

Always dry completely after cleaning or contact with water. Moisture left in crevices accelerates tarnish, especially around stone settings.

Natural Gemstones

Each stone has its own character and its own needs.

Amethyst
Avoid prolonged sunlight · harsh chemicals

Wipe with a damp soft cloth. Amethyst can fade with extended UV exposure, store away from direct sunlight when not wearing.

Garnet
Avoid ultrasonic cleaners · sudden temperature changes

Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Garnet is durable but sensitive to sudden temperature changes, avoid steam cleaning.

Moonstone
Avoid sharp impact · ultrasonic cleaners

Moonstone is softer than most gems and can scratch. Clean gently with a damp cloth only. Avoid mechanical cleaning methods entirely.

Labradorite
Avoid acids · abrasive materials

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Labradorite's characteristic play of colour (labradorescence) is internal, gentle surface cleaning is all it needs.

Iolite
Avoid acids · rough handling

Clean with warm water and mild soap. Iolite shows different colours from different angles, this is natural and called pleochroism, not a defect.

All Stones
Universal rules

Never use bleach, ammonia or alcohol on any natural stone. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless specifically noted as safe. When in doubt, a damp soft cloth is always the right answer.

Storage

How you store your pieces matters as much as how you wear them.

Every Amaraeth order includes an anti-tarnish pouch. Use it. Keeping pieces separate prevents scratching, and the anti-tarnish lining slows oxidation significantly.

Use the Amaraeth pouch

Store your pieces in the protective pouch when not wearing them.

Keep pieces separate

Store each piece individually to prevent scratching. Harder stones will scratch softer metals and other stones if left together.

Avoid humidity

Do not store jewellery in bathrooms. Humidity accelerates tarnish on silver. A cool, dry drawer or jewellery box is ideal.

Hang necklaces and chains

Store necklaces hanging rather than coiled to prevent kinking and tangling. If you must store flat, lay them straight.
